“There Will Be No Singing”

Champlevé Enamel on copper with hand fabricated sterling silver and stainless steel pin findings.

I made a body of work over the summer in 2020 called “The Art of Singing” after I left my teaching job. I remember my boss at the time saying “there will be no singing” referring to the 2020-2021 school year due to the pandemic. That’s when I knew shit got real. In April, I quietly packed 12 years of art teacher things and said goodbye to my favorite music teacher colleagues (I miss you) to peruse a life of enamel.

*insert tears here* Anyway...

This is part of a series of pieces that were inspired by a binder I found that was kept by a vocal music teacher in 1947. Basically, it struck a chord (see what I did there?) with me. Music is one way we find connections. Through live music, church choirs, school music programs, Broadway, and karaoke...people gather and partake in something that is healing, joyful, and meaningful. What better way to praise, celebrate, appreciate, and participate than with a song? It saddens me that song, breath, and voice is muffled, discouraged, and unsafe due to the pandemic.

These brooches are great for a sweater, but not a bag. Enamel is fused glass to a metal surface and is fragile. It will crack if dropped. Take care by making sure it is secure, and do not wear it on a day that you will be active.
