Have you ever wondered about the pattern on the Composition Notebook?

The pattern is inspired by traditional marble printing techniques found in early centuries China and Japan. In Japan, this technique is called Suminagashi. For centuries, this technique was practiced, and adopted by many other countries, like Turkey, which used a similar process called Erbu.

These techniques were eventually picked up in Europe.

In Germany, a technique to create a pseudo-marble design was created and called agate. This industrialized the design so it could be mass produced and was never patented.

In the 1970’s (ish) Mead borrowed the agate design, and made it super popular, and turned into everyone’s grade school pattern of joy (or dread. Whatever.)

*I am in no way knowledgeable about anything marbling techniques. However, I came across a beautiful and calming video of one of the processes, and have it in my link, if you are a nerd and want to check it out. Also...all information gathered has been found by googling.

**this piece is Champlevé enamel on copper set in an etched copper backing and silver bezel. Everything else is sterling silver. I tried to make one side of this piece with a wider bezel, and wasn’t 100% happy, so I remade it in silver and will post it soon.
