Peanut Butter Jelly Time Merry-go-round

Fabricated from a sterling silver sheet, this piece is etched from a piece of paper I wrote for my 3rd-grade teacher on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Every part of this piece is purposefully etched and meticulously placed.

Here is why….

In the third grade, I was embarrassed by my teacher in front of the class.

The class stood around her as she attempted to follow my handwritten instructions on how to make a peanut butter sandwich.

She read:
“Opin the peenot butter. Spred it on the bred.”

She opened the peanut butter and paused. She asked me what she should spread it on the bread with? Her hands?! she couldn’t move forward with making a sandwich based on my writing and by the way, my spelling needs work.

My body got warm. I touched my cheeks…they were burning. I cry. In that order. I still react this way now, when I have to do public things, and be a normal participant in society.

This was a moment that decided that I didn’t love school. I would get by on relatively good behavior and the letter “C” would just have to do. Because getting A’s mean you actively participate. And I was done with that.

Fast forward….I started seriously making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in 2013 when my oldest was 2 years old. If you have kids, you know it’s literally an art form in itself. Three kids later, and they all pack a lunch, I make them multiple times a week…

I know it’s silly, but everytime I make one, I just think of my third grade teacher…and I spread the peanut butter on a little more aggressively
